The vestibular system is also known as the inner ear system. When the vestibular system is off-balance it can cause a variety of symptoms, but the most common symptom is vertigo (like dizziness), which is when it feels like the room is spinning. Other symptoms may include nausea, fatigue, loss of balance, ringing in the ears, and sensitivity to light and/or sound. There are two different types of vestibular disorders: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and Unilateral Hypofunction. The symptoms can appear following a traumatic incident or can come on gradually without reason.

A concussion also affects the vestibular system. A concussion is an injury to the brain due to a traumatic blow or shaking to the head. Common symptoms experienced following a concussion are dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and sensitivity to light.

All of these disorders can be treated with physical therapy. Physical therapy will aid in speeding up the overall recovery process and allow for optimal vestibular function to be restored to eliminate symptoms and allow for full function. Treatment procedures include manual (hands-on) therapy and vestibular-specific exercises. The diagnosis, prognosis, and all treatments will be tailored to the individual and fully explained by a licensed physical therapist.
